Discipline Tactics That (Really) Work

How do you effectively discipline during a public meltdown? This question might plague you on a daily basis. Let's face it. Disciplining can be a very touchy subject. If you're lucky, you may get some great tips from your mom friends. You may also hear stories that will make you cringe. When it comes to discipline, there are conflicting opinions as to what you should or should not do. There is no magic or perfect answer.

Discipline is a trial and error process that seems to work with a single theme. You have to find a method of discipline that works best for you and your child. It's no fun trying to enforce your rules. But remember, you are doing what's best for your child in the long run. And you may eventually make it through the checkout aisle of the grocery store.

1. Stay the course. Being consistent is hard to do, sometimes it seems much easier to just cave in, but staying firm to your word will pay off in the end. Your child will soon realize that you mean business.

2. When to ignore. Not all behaviors require a disciplinary act. Often our children are just seeking our attention, but going about it in a negative way. Reprimanding them is giving that negative behavior attention. Sometimes it is just best to pretend you don't see your toddler screaming and flopping on the floor in front of you. Eventually, they will tire out.

3. Keep your cool. It is easy to get flustered when dealing with misbehaving children, especially after a long hard day. But remember to lead by example. If you react by yelling and getting angry, they will learn to respond in the same way.
