What Happened to My Life?

Parenthood ... there isn't a book in the world that could come close to fully explaining the enormity of the job! The absolute joys, the hardships, the tears shed, the life lessons learned, and the laugh lines earned. Being a parent is an experience that truly only another one can understand.

Even experienced parents don't understand everything about parenthood. There are new challenges every day -- being tested in ways you never thought existed. You love in ways you never thought possible.

For stay-at-home moms, you might refer to your experience as "identity theft." The shift into motherhood is a complete physical, mental, and emotional transformation. While many of the physical changes take place during pregnancy, many of the life changes continue after your baby arrives -- career goals, financial troubles, travel plans, family and social life, your marriage, etc.

You can't help but wonder from time to time, "What happened to MY life?" Don't feel guilty having those thoughts because they are absolutely normal! Here are a few thoughts on how to keep your sanity.

1. Day by day. Take each new phase of parenthood one step at a time. Life with children is a major adjustment on so many levels, so don't rush it. Allow yourself time to absorb the changes in your life and make the best decisions for you. Don't pay any mind to all the unsolicited advice about what a parent should do or be.

2. They don't come with instructions. It doesn't matter how many books you read, or what you think you might know, it's still not enough. Children are life's greatest curveball. Instead of trying to outsmart them all the time, why not grow with them?

3. Recharge. You might be one of those parents who initially never thought about her own needs. But everyone needs a recharge. Maybe it is a few minutes a day, a few hours a week, or a short vacation. Whatever you can arrange, be sure to enjoy some good R&R!!
