Potty-Training

Potty-training your toddler can be an exciting time. It's a giant step toward a huge milestone you'll want to celebrate -- life without diapers! But don't break out the bells and whistles yet -- you may be in for a bumpy ride.

You may have read all the books, picked the brains of all the parents in your playgroup, and thought for sure, "My kids will be out of diapers in a flash." But it might not happen like that. It can take a whole lot of patience, an endless supply of training pants, and plastic covering everything in the house to get you there. But it will happen!

Here are a few tips that may help you in the process.

1. A reward system goes a long way. Children love positive reinforcement, and they will jump through hoops for a good treat. Perhaps you could try organic jelly beans to encourage the first few visits to the potty, then switch to stickers once the potty visits became more frequent. Keep some treats handy when you are on the go, too.

2. Acclimation is everything. A bathroom and loud flushing potty may be a bit scary for toddlers. Get them used to the bathroom, so they are not overwhelmed at first. You may even want to formally introduce them to the toilet. You could have your kids add their own personal touches, like stickers on the back of the toilet seat. After all, they are going to be spending a lot of time in there.

3. Forgo fashion. In the first few months of potty-training you'll need to yank down their pants at record speeds, so there won't be time to undo frilly bows or buttons. Do yourself a favor and get some easy-access, elastic-waist pants or skirts to get you started.

Toddler Tips
•  Remember, you can't make your toddler eat, go to sleep, or poop on the potty.
•  Toilet training is a developmental milestone. You can't train your child because YOU want them to be trained.
•
•  The desire to be clean is the only thing that will motivate your child to leave their toy trains or dolls to go use the bathroom (no matter how many candies you try to bribe them with).
