Title
Swearing and Bad Behaviors

Nothing is more embarrassing than a toddler with a bad case of potty mouth! Funny as it sounds in the moment, you might also be horrified that your angel would say such things.

At this age, just consider your toddler a little learning sponge. They pick up on everything, even the things you least expect, which can be even more frightening. Now is the time to really clean up your act and your language, especially if you have a case of potty mouth. And be weary of your gestures and expressions -- they will pick up those as well.

Here are a few tips to help clean up your little one's potty mouth.

1. Ignore it. Sometimes it is best just to ignore the potty words. More than likely, it is just a means of getting your attention, even if it is being reprimanded. If you ignore it, they will find another way to test their limits.

2. Constructive Criticism. Sometimes enough is enough, and you have to enforce the rules. Rather than draw attention to the actual "bad words," try suggesting "feeling words" or another means of expression for your child. Teaching them to use the correct words to describe their feelings sounds much better.

3. Editing. It's time to really pay attention to what your child is exposed to. Change the TV channel to more appropriate programs, censor your friends' use of language. Our kids are going to hear and see things from time to time, but if you are consistent in how you address the situation, your potty mouth days should be coming to an end.

Toddler Tips
•  Be a good role model. Your toddler is watching, always watching (and listening).
•  We are not born with social skills. View your toddler's missteps as teaching moments.
•  It's counterproductive to spank, or wash your child's mouth out with soap. You are the grown-up, remember?
•  Some toddlers behave badly just to get your attention, just ignoring these behaviors often makes them go away.
