Raising a Respectful Child

There may be nothing more pleasing to your ears than hearing your children say, "please" and "thank you." It makes you feel like you are actually doing something right! Let's face it. Raising a respectful child in today's world is no easy task. Our children are exposed to so many negative influences that it makes our job as parents that much harder.

You may have heard the phrase, "You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar." It's true. You -- and your kids -- can get a lot farther in life when you show respect and treat others kindly.

Here are some tips to help teach your children to be respectful.

1. Start early. Teach your children about values and respect at an early age. Talk to them about feelings and why to treat people fairly. Use examples that they can relate to such as sharing or interacting nicely with friends on the playground.

2. Lead by example. Much of what our children learn, they learn from us. So don't expect your child to use good manners if you do not. Teaching respect begins at home. It's so important to practice what you preach at home, so that your children grow up with an understanding of what behavior is acceptable and what is not.

3. Be consistent. And be realistic in the expectations and rules you set. Children still are not perfect and will misbehave. It is the lessons they learn from those mistakes that is most important.

Toddler Tips
•  Be a good role model. Demonstrate the behavior you want to see.
•  If you don't want your children interrupting when you talk, you need to listen and let them talk without interruption.
•  Practice role-play taking turns and sharing at home, so your children will do this when you're not around to remind them.
•  Catch your children being good. Often, we only comment about bad behavior. Praise your children when they are behaving well, and they're more likely to repeat that behavior!
