Learning to Share

I'm sure that we've all witnessed our children in full-blown tug-of-wars in the play yard, and it can get ugly.

Learning to share can be a tough lesson for many toddlers. You may know some adults who struggle with the concept. Sharing is one of the most important lessons we can teach our children. So why is it so difficult for them? Most children feel a sense of ownership when it comes to "their" stuff. And asking them to give it up just does not seem fair. That's understandable. Rather than make children feel like they are being punished by taking away their toys/turns, teach them that sharing can be fun. Allowing each child ample time to enjoy their turn will help keep the excitement going and give your child the attention they desire.

Here are some helpful tips to put an end to the tug-of-wars.

1. Hide the favorites. Every child has toys or possessions that are dearest to them, so be sure to set some boundaries when it comes to sharing. Special toys should be kept separate from the usual basket of toys.

2. Set the timer. Silly as it may sound, a kitchen timer can be a parent's best friend.

3. Group games. A great way to teach your child that sharing is fun is to engage them in group activities such as board games and puzzles -- each child gets a fair turn and the whole group enjoys the activity.

Toddler Tips
•  Kids are not born with social skills; rather they are born with a survival-of-the-fittest mentality. So don't expect them to share!
•  Teach your child to take turns with a toy by setting a kitchen timer for the time each child can play with it.
•  If you have an older toddler and a younger sibling, let the toddler have some toys that they don't have to share. Those stay in the room in a special place.
