Title
Sexploration in Toddlers

Children have a funny way of discovering things. They might stick their heads underneath bathroom stalls for a sneak peek, or catch you off guard by pulling up your skirt and asking, "What's that?" They are curious little beings and what could be more exciting than to explore than the human body?

There are many ways for parents to approach these situations. You have to do what is most appropriate for the child and what is most comfortable for you. There will be ample opportunities to further explain the form and function of the body, so for now just stick to the basics.

1. Name that part. Now that they have discovered their "privates," it's a great time to have that little chat. You can give very simple explanations as to what the parts do, who has what, and what they are called. It will help your child gain more self-awareness.

2. Time and place. A child exploring their genitalia is completely normal and should not be discouraged. Instead, emphasize that it is their private parts and touching them should be done in private. Sometimes there is an accidental discovery during bath time, so take advantage of bath time routines to talk to your child about their body and answer any questions they may have.

3. Keep it private. Now that your child has discovered their body parts, it's a good idea to teach them about how others should or should NOT relate to their body. You may want to talk to your child about when it is OK to be naked and with whom, etc. It's never too early to start making children aware of their surroundings.
