Keeping Up With Others

Overly doting parents can be obnoxious. You would think their children walked on water. It's wonderful that your child is doing so well, but don't dominate every conversation by bragging about every accolade or accomplishment. It's great if you throw in glowing tidbits here and there, but don't overdo it because you may find yourself on the outside of the parents' social ring.

Here are some tips to help you deal with the overly doting parent.

1. Change the subject. Rather than flat out tell the dad next to you at the soccer game to "shut up," try politely changing the subject entirely. Or excuse yourself from the conversation; hopefully, they will get the hint that you have had enough.

2. Change of scenery. If there are certain parents that really get under your skin, then maybe it is time to try out a new park or make your way into a new social circle. It's best to surround yourself with like-minded people.

3. Don't be intimidated. Easier said than done when your neighbor's child is speaking Spanish and yours is still making poo-poo noises. Don't feel the pressure to push your child into something just so you can keep up with the group. Go ahead and introduce them to new activities, but don't force your child to take part in every available sport or club activity. Be proud of who they are, not what they do.

•  Be proud of your child's accomplishments, but don't base your own success on them.
•  If you simply must brag about your child, share your excitement with grandparents or aunts and uncles, who will be more than happy to agree that your child is a prodigy!
